Voice typing in Word on Windows
Long documents, said in your own time.
A long document is where typing hurts most: a report, a letter, a chapter. VinPUT does not care how long it gets. With a speech model on your PC, dictation is unlimited, with no time limit and no account. It types into Word the way it types into any program, at the caret.
Start here
- Download VinPUT and pick a model under Settings, Models. Whisper shows text at each pause, which suits long passages.
- Click where the text goes in Word.
- Tap F1, talk as long as you like, tap F1 to stop.
Paragraphs and punctuation
Say new paragraph on its own and pause, and VinPUT types a blank line; new line gives a line break. These are the spoken commands VinPUT has for layout. It has no spoken commands for punctuation: the speech model adds commas and full stops itself. If the result is rough, set the cleanup for your key to Clean under Settings, Cleanup. It removes filler words and repeats and fixes punctuation, and needs a text model: Plus or Pro, or Gemma or Qwen on your PC.
Use F1 in Word. The Enter that F2 presses would start a new paragraph after every dictation.
Change it by voice
Under Settings, Cleanup, you can set an edit key. Select a sentence, hold the key and say what to change, such as "make this shorter", and the result replaces the selection. If it cannot be edited, the selection is left as it was.
Limits
Bold, styles and tables stay on the keyboard, because VinPUT types text. A Word started as administrator blocks typing. Names and terms go into the dictionary, up to 200 words.
Questions
Is there a limit on how long a document I can dictate?
No limit for a speech model on your PC. A dictation stops by itself after 30 minutes of silence, and you can set that time.
Can I say "comma" and "full stop"?
VinPUT has no spoken punctuation commands. The model puts punctuation in itself, and Clean cleanup fixes what it misses.
Do I need an account?
No, not with a model on your PC. Plus and Pro need one and add cloud hours.
