Type vs Talk
How much faster is speaking your prompts?
If you build with a coding tool, you write prompts all day. Type one, then say the same one, and see the gap in your own numbers. It takes about two minutes.
Everything runs in this page. Your typing, your voice and your result are not uploaded or stored. One thing to know: if you choose the Listen mode, your browser does the speech recognition, and a browser may send the audio to its maker's service. In Chrome that is Google. The timer mode sends nothing.
Step 1 of 3: type this prompt
Type it as shown. The clock starts with your first key and stops when you reach the end, or after 90 seconds. Pasting is switched off.

Sharing is up to you: nothing is sent unless you press one of these.

How the numbers are worked out
- One word is five characters. This is the usual typing-test rule. It is applied to both rounds, so the two speeds are in the same unit and the ratio is fair.
- Typing. Correct characters divided by five, divided by the minutes from your first key to your last. Accuracy is the share of characters that match the prompt at the same place.
- Speaking, Listen mode. The words your browser recognised, matched against the prompt, over the time from your first word to your last. If it misses words, your speed is under-counted, not inflated.
- Speaking, timer mode. The prompt's length over the time you take to read it all aloud, from Start to Stop.
- Time saved. A prompt of 250 characters, at your two speeds, times the prompts per day you choose, and 22 working days a month.
One caveat: in the second round you have already read the text, which helps a little. A prompt you are making up as you go is slower to say, and slower to type.
Questions
Is my voice sent anywhere?
This page does not upload your typing, your voice or your result. The Listen mode uses your browser's built-in speech recognition, and that can send audio to the browser maker's service: in Chrome, Web Speech uses Google's servers. The timer mode sends nothing; it only measures how long you take to read the prompt aloud.
What is a good typing speed?
Most adults type about 35 to 55 words per minute on plain text. 65 or more is fast, and 100 or more is professional level. Code and prompts, with names and symbols, slow most people down. Normal speech runs at about 130 to 160 words per minute.
Does VinPUT work offline?
Yes. After you download a speech model, VinPUT dictates with no internet connection, no account and no time limit. The optional Plus and Pro plans send audio over an encrypted connection to VinPUT's service in the EU and need a connection. See offline speech to text.
