Voice typing in Discord on Windows

Chat replies by voice, without fighting your push-to-talk.

Discord is quick and casual: short replies, a link and a joke, a long explanation now and then. All of it is a text field, so VinPUT can type into it. What is different about Discord is who else wants your keys and your microphone.

Keys that do not collide

VinPUT takes its keys exclusively while it runs, so the focused app no longer sees them. That works the other way too: if Discord or a game already holds F1 or F2, VinPUT shows a Hotkey unavailable notification and you pick another. Under Settings, General, Hotkeys you can use a combination such as Ctrl with a function key, which is less likely to be taken. Combinations Windows keeps for itself, like Alt+Tab, are refused.

The microphone

VinPUT listens with the microphone Windows uses by default. If your headset is not the default, pick it under Settings, General, Input, Audio input. The change applies to the next dictation. In a voice channel, anyone there hears whatever your microphone picks up, so mute yourself in Discord before you dictate a reply.

F2 for replies, F1 for the rest

In a chat box Enter sends, so F2 answers in one go: say it, and it is posted when you stop. Use F1 for anything you want to read first, such as a post in a server with many people. Esc drops a dictation before it is typed.

  1. Download VinPUT, choose a model under Settings, Models.
  2. Click into the Discord message box.
  3. Tap F2, say the reply, tap F2 again.

Questions

Will F1 or F2 break my push-to-talk?

Only if they are the same key. VinPUT keeps the keys it is given while it runs, so change one of the two and they will not meet.

Can it pick emoji and mentions?

It types the words you say. Mentions, channel names and emoji you choose with the keyboard, because VinPUT only types text.

Does Discord get my voice from VinPUT?

No. Discord only sees the typed text. With a speech model on your PC, the audio never leaves the PC.
