Voice typing in VS Code on Windows

For the sentences around the code.

In VS Code I write words as often as code: comments, commit messages, README text, notes to myself in a markdown file. Those are sentences, which is what a speech model is good at. VinPUT is a separate program that types into the focused field, so VS Code needs no extension.

Which key, where

WhereKeyWhy
A comment or a markdown fileF1F2 would add a line break at the end.
The commit message boxF1Read the message, then commit it yourself.
A search box or the file pickerF2Where Enter runs the search, F2 does it for you.
A chat panelF2Where Enter sends, F2 sends.

Names without typing them

Say snake case and then the words for build_index, kebab case for build-index, camel case for buildIndex. The command counts only at the start of a dictation or after a pause, so a sentence that merely contains the words is typed as said. Names the model keeps getting wrong go into the dictionary.

What it does not do

VinPUT types text. It does not move around the editor, and I have not documented a way to say brackets or semicolons, so you type those. I find it best for prose and for naming things, and the keyboard better for the code itself. If VS Code was started as administrator, Windows blocks typing into it.

Try it in three steps

  1. Download VinPUT and choose a model under Settings, Models.
  2. Click where the text should go in VS Code.
  3. Tap F1, say the sentence, tap F1 again.

Questions

Do I need an extension?

No. VinPUT runs on its own and types into whichever window has focus.

Does it work in the integrated terminal?

Yes, it is a text field like any other. Read the line before you press Enter, since F2 would run it. The terminal page has more.

Does the code I dictate leave my PC?

Not with a speech model on your PC. Plus and Pro send audio to VinPUT's service in the EU, which stores neither audio nor text.
