Speak prompts to Cursor on Windows
Say the request, and let F2 send it.
Most of what I type in Cursor is not code. It is a request to the agent, a correction after it went the wrong way, or a few sentences about a bug I can see but have not fixed yet. That is talk, and I say it faster than I type it. VinPUT types what you say into whatever has focus, so the chat box in Cursor takes your voice as if it came from the keyboard.
Corrections are the best use
A long first prompt is fine to type. The small ones are where voice wins: "no, use the helper that already exists in utils", "keep the old tests, change only the new function". Put the cursor in the chat box, hold F2 while you say it and let go. The words are typed, then Enter goes out once the last one is in.
If you want to read the prompt before it goes, use F1 and press Enter yourself.
Get the names right
- Dictionary. Add the libraries and functions you talk about, with a "sounds like" spelling when the model mishears one. It holds up to 200 words.
- Casing. Say snake case and then the words for
user_id, or camel case foruserId. - Coding prompt. Under Settings, Cleanup, you can have the F2 dictation rewritten as a coding prompt before it is typed. It is off until you choose it and needs Plus or Pro, or Gemma or Qwen on your PC.
- Snippets. A phrase such as "review checklist" can stand for a saved text of up to 1000 characters.
How to
- Install VinPUT and pick a speech model under Settings, Models.
- Click into the Cursor chat box.
- Press F2, say the prompt, and press F2 again. Esc drops it instead.
Where it stops
If Cursor runs as administrator, Windows blocks typing into it, so start it normally. VinPUT types words; it does not know your project, and speech models still stumble on odd identifiers. Check what Enter does in the box you are in before you trust F2 there.
Questions
Does it work in the editor as well as the chat?
Yes, in any text field. In the editor, use F1, because the Enter that F2 presses would add a line break.
Can I use it for commit messages?
Yes. F1 types where the caret is, in the message box or anywhere else in Cursor.
Which speech model suits prompts?
Whisper types at each pause, while Parakeet and Qwen3-ASR type when you stop. VinPUT Pro types about half a second behind you. Choose under Settings, Models.
