Voice typing in ChatGPT on Windows

Ask by speaking, and let F2 press Enter.

The ChatGPT page is one big text box, and a prompt is usually something you could just say. Open it in your browser, click into the box and hold F2. VinPUT types the words, then presses Enter once the last of them is in, so the question goes out when you stop talking.

Long prompts, in one go

The longer the prompt, the more typing costs and the more talking helps: the background, the thing you tried, what you want back, the format. Tap F1 or F2 to start, keep going, tap again. Pausing to think is fine; a dictation runs until you stop it or 30 minutes pass in silence.

When you want to read the prompt before it goes, use F1. A speech model can mishear a name, and it is cheaper to fix that before sending than after.

Tools that help

  • Dictionary. Product names and jargon, with a "sounds like" spelling for the ones that go wrong.
  • Snippets. An opening like "answer in short bullet points" saved as text up to 1000 characters.
  • Languages. Set the ones you speak under Settings, General. Whisper models know 99, and VinPUT Pro follows more than 60, even mixed in one sentence.

How to

  1. Download VinPUT and choose a model under Settings, Models.
  2. Click into the ChatGPT box.
  3. Press F2, ask, press F2 again.

What leaves your PC

Your voice stays on the PC when you use a speech model on it. What you type is another matter: once the text is in the box and sent, it goes where that site sends it, whoever typed it.

Questions

Is this the same as ChatGPT's own voice feature?

No. VinPUT is a separate program that recognizes your speech and types it into the box. ChatGPT only receives text.

Will F2 send before I finish talking?

No. Enter is pressed only when you stop the dictation. Esc cancels it instead.

Does it cost anything?

No, not for dictation with a model on your PC. Plus and Pro are optional and add cloud hours.
